Zakaj sta PIPA in SOPA zanič zamisli?

The Rise of the Netizen

As we recover from the online clash of SOPA and look at the Komen turn about this week… we are seeing the rise of the next world power - the Netizen. I will argue this power will define the next century as it awakes and realizes the immense power it has to reform the way the US, and indeed, the world works.

For a decade this powerful group was there but dormant… immature and not self-aware. I will argue this was a function of the nature of the early netizens. We were the geeks, rarely part of the "in" crowd in high school...who succeeded not through politics but through individual success. Politics was not something we were comfortable with. SOPA, surprisingly, was the catalyst to changing this. Like the Ants in a "Bugs Life"… we realized we didn't need to put up with it.

Of course, there was the Arab Spring and Occupy Wallstreet. But these were fueled by many factors. The Arab Spring began with social media but the real driver was coverage by Al Jazeera that allowed the feedback loop to build. Occupy Wallstreet was a sweetheart of the press looking for local unrest and probably would not have survived without the press cameras.

SOPA, on the other hand, was nearly invisible in the press almost to the moment that is was derailed. This wasn't surprising, the press has much to gain from SOPA. They had skin in the game. Not feeling that they were heard, the Netizens escalated the fight and began the most intense political action of their history (stoked by online sites like Google and Wikipedia). They raged against the machine stopped it in its tracks.

The blood… is now in water. The netizen nation… 800M Facebook users, 90M Google+ users, and of course, Twitter... are becoming the largest singular force in the world… not just in size but dexterity... able to organize instantly, react with intense force and funding, and put the world into a new gear of development. When they begin to really engage and organize, they could reform every democratic government within a decade. SOPA supporters way yearn for the days when copyright protections existed at the level they do today… before the netizens decided they wanted something more open and did something about it.

Don't expect anything to happen instantly. This new nation has just awoken. But expect great things from this magical force. Possibly terrible things… but great.
